"Not all tattoo artists are created equal"
Tattooing is one of the fastest growing professions. Reality TV shows like Ink Master, Best Ink, Black Ink Crew, L.A Ink and a veritable cornucopia of related shows, have fanned the flames of this profession and cast it into the forefront of our everyday lives. People from all cultures, races and creeds are getting tattooed and Tattoo Studios are suddenly popping up everywhere; they have seen it on TV and they want one too!
Most tattoo studios will have a small library of tattoo magazines, digests, Bibles, Big Books Of…
But one of the types of people who annoy Tattoo Artists most is those who will walk in, smile brightly and announce in a clear voice that they want a tattoo! (This is acceptable behaviour). I will ask what they had in mind, and in the same clear voice, they will say ‘I don’t know….. What will look good?’ (This is unacceptable behaviour).
We are here to help folks but you need to at least have a slight/kinda/almost idea of what you want. Some people must be reading this and thinking ‘WHAT!’ who walks into a tattoo studio without an idea, but I am telling you, it happens more than you think. Since any tattoo is a personal choice we can’t tell you what you will like, you need to tell us. So think about it, sleep on it and have a slight/kinda/almost idea of what you want before you come in.
Haggling! ...Just don't do it!
Being a Tattoo Artist is not an easy profession; it takes years of dedication and practice to perfect your individual style.
As Aristotle once said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
REMEMBER, IT’S ART PEOPLE!
You wouldn’t try to negotiate the price of a microwave at your local electronics store! Every Artist will decide his own price; either an hourly rate or a full price for a completed tattoo. For large tattoos that will take multiple sessions, the price can usually be divided and paid after every session. But don’t insult your artist by asking for a discount…remember who will soon be sticking needles into your skin.
Leave your Aunts and Uncles at Home
We understand that getting a tattoo, especially your first tattoo, can be an emotional experience.
Did you choose the right design, and is it in the right place? How much is it going to hurt? All these and many more thoughts are racing through your mind, you probably feel light headed, nauseated, even nervous! Kinda like when you lost your virginity right!? And like that day, we would prefer that if you need someone with you, it is just ONE someone.
Tattoo studios are generally small places. When you bring your Mom, Dad, Funny Uncle, 2 cousins, best friend and a picnic, the shop fills up quicker than the first life boat on the Titanic! This makes Artists very anxious!
Tattooing takes an incredible amount of concentration and having to answer three people simultaneously while negotiating the tricky part of the collar bone is not the recipe for happiness.
Tender Loving After Care
Once your new tattoo is complete the artist will clean it, wrap it, and give you detailed instructions on how to care for your new ink. Since most advertising is done by word of mouth the Artist will want their work to look as good as possible. But this won’t happen if you decide to go swimming the day after you get your tattoo!
An infection will absolutely destroy your tattoo and could lead to scarring so pay attention when after care is discussed! A quick internet search brings up a plethora of Do’s and Don’t but it is always best to use the method your Artist advised, after all, they know what they are doing.
So to sum up, know more or less what you want to get. Accept that a good looking tattoo is not going to be cheap. Come alone or with ONE partner and please don’t damage our good work with a lack of common sense!
